It took Taylor a couple of tries to figure out the X-ray machine but, like he said, he was a fast learner. After capturing the X-rays, Cor provided a saliva sample and left him at the lab to run the tests.

Cor’s first stop was back at his house. Earlier, when he had closed his mother’s bedroom door, he noticed a box labeled Paperwork. On top of that box was an accordion file with Cor written on it. He had never taken an active interest in his history or medical records but with Taylor working on things at the lab, he thought there might be documentation that could shed some light on the transfusion.

Cor set the box down on the kitchen table, unwrapped the elastic on the accordion file and began flipping through the paperwork. The file contained mostly insignificant memorabilia, report cards, academic awards, little league championship certificates and some drawings he had done in grade school. The paperwork in the file probably held some sentimental value for Jane but was virtually worthless to Cor. Until he came across his birth certificate.

He had never seen it before, had never cared to. As he pulled the official document from the file, he immediately noticed something was very, very wrong. The birth certificate was a registered legal document from the State of Washington. Cor’s place of birth was listed as:

MEMORIAL HOSPITAL, SEATTLE, WA

His name was listed correctly:

CORDELL BLAKELY GRIFFIN

For Mother’s Name, typed and signed on the line was:

JANE CORDELL

That doesn’t make sense. Cor’s mother had always claimed that her name was Griffin.

Next to her name, the spot for Father’s Name should have been a blank line. Jane had always maintained that Cor’s father took off as soon as she told him she was pregnant. That field should have nothing. Maybe a row of X’s typed through it. Or UNKNOWN. Instead, the information listed there put an end to the biggest lie of Cordell Griffin’s life:

FATHER’S NAME: BLAKELY GRIFFIN

And it was signed.
